RYA Sailing Level 2 - Basic Skills

Check our latest availability for RYA Sailing Level 2 here.

Overview

On completion of this course, the successful sailor will be safety conscious, have a basic knowledge of sailing and be capable of sailing without an instructor on board in reasonable winds. You will learn how to use basic boat controls to complete basic manoeuvres including picking up a man overboard and coming alongside another boat or pontoon.

Led by our experienced RYA instructors, you will spend plenty of time on the water practicing key skills and manoeuvres such as controlling the speed of the boat, building confidence and independence afloat. Key seamanship skills including basic ropework and sailing theory will be developed through the course.

By the end of the course, you will be capable of sailing independently with confidence and independence in good wind and on-water conditions. It also qualifies sailors with the competence to hire dinghies at a majority of authorised water sports centres.

What you will learn

  • Launching and recovering a dinghy independently
  • Building confidence sailing in all directions
  • Capsize recovery and self-rescue
  • Basic sailing rules and safety awareness on the water
  • Essential safety knowledge
  • Developing confidence and control in single-handed/double-handed boats
