START SAILING FACT SHEET

I am new to sailing how do I start?

The best way is to book on an RYA Level 1 course at a recognised RYA Training Centre. At Bartley Sailing Club our training is conducted by Andrew Simpson Centre Birmingham based upstairs in the clubhouse. All the information you require can be found on their website https://andrewsimpsoncentres.org/our-centres/birmingham

Do I need to join the sailing club to learn to sail?

You do not have to join the sailing club to learn to sail through Andrew Simpson Centre Birmingham, however if you plan to continue sailing at Bartley reservoir after you have completed your course then you may wish to consider joining as a member first to have access to reduced prices on training with ASC Birmingham. If you are unsure if sailing will be for you and wish to try out sailing first, we suggest you book on with ASC Birmingham to experience what it is like and if you fall in love with the sport then join the club when you have completed your training course in order to use the water. Details of membership can be found on the 'Membership Fact Sheet'

What equipment do I need to buy?

When you start out nothing! Equipment is provided for courses as part of the fee. In fact, we discourage buying your own equipment until you have a bit of experience and have a clearer picture as to what sort of sailing you will be doing. When you are at this point have a look at our 'Clothing and Equipment Fact Sheet' for some guidance.

How much will it cost?

Course costs and booking details can be found on the Andrew Simpson Centre Birmingham website https://andrewsimpsoncentres.org/our-centres/birmingham

Is it the same for Juniors and adults or are there different options?

There are many different options offered by ASC Birmingham for juniors and adults alike, whether you want to learn as a family or drop the children off at the K2O club for them to learn with others of similar age there is a package for your needs.

How do I continue after I have been on a course and learnt to sail?

Once you have completed your course and wish to continue sailing at the club then just join as a member (see 'Membership Fact Sheet') to open up your access to the club and its facilities.

Do I need to buy a boat?

You will learn to sail in the club boats which are also available to rent once you are a member of Bartley Sailing Club. If you are an occasional sailor then this may be a good solution for you. If you want to sail regularly and progress your skills then boat ownership is the next step. See the 'Buying a Boat Fact Sheet' for more details.
