Powerboat 2 courses for members

Published 19:46 on 11 Mar 2023
We have 319 members registered on our system for rescue duty. 93 of them have registered that they have the RYA Powerboat level 2 certification that is a requirement of membership.
What we need you to do:
1) update your record on the system - if you have Powerboat level 2 (PB2) then please indicate so on your profile so we have accurate records.
2) If you don't have PB2 certification please book onto a course at your earliest convenience.
What we are doing:
1) Making sure we have PB2 qualified drivers allocated for each duty crew
2) Providing training courses so members can get their PB2 certification for a reduced 'members rate' of £85 for the two day course run through our training partners Andrew Simpson Centre Birmingham.
The first 2 sessions are April 1st and 2nd and April 22nd and 23rd. Please book your slot using the 'event' tab on the website www.bartleysailingclub.com. There are 6 places per course and you can put yourself on the waiting list if all slots have gone in case anyone drops out at the last minute.
Payment will be on the day directly to Andrew Simpson Centre Birmingham so no need to pay up-front.
Note that the £85 is a significant discount vs the commercial charge of around £250 to £300, but if there are club members who are struggling to pay the £85 due to their financial situation then get in touch with birmingham@andrewsimpsoncentres.org who may be able to help with a grant subsidy depending on individual circumstances.
More courses will become available throughout the year however we expect the rate to increase gradually towards the £120 mark as instructor costs are increasing - so book early!
3) Provide 'Up skill' / 'PB2 refresher' activities for duty crews
This is still to be finalised but the thought is for Andrew Simpson Centre staff to provide refresher training to the duty crew on the day from 9.30 to 10.30 whilst powerboat checks are conducted and the boats are launched. There will be no charge for this.
Periodically there are some very gruesome powerboat accidents around the country that we get to hear about from the RYA, thankfully none have happened at Bartley. Most of these could have been avoided with the correct training and protocols, please act upon the above to keep yourself safe and those around you safe.
