Death of Vic Lewis, the First Commodore of Bartley S.C.
I was informed this morning that Vic Lewis, who was a founder member and first Commodore of Bartley S.C., passed away at the weekend. At present I know no more details apart from the fact that he had been frail for some time following a fall. When I know details of the funeral I will post details.
Vic was a fast sailor and a superlative tactician. Following a career as a reporter and sailing correspondent of the Birmingham Post he set up in business as Vic Lewis Boats, specialising in the fitting out of Larks. He was adept at sussing out a potential customer, selling them an old boat, encouraging them to join Bartley and then persuading them to upgrade once they had grasped the essentials of sailing.
He was Commodore for 6 years (from memory) and oversaw the establishment of the Club from "portacabin" type structures to the Clubhouse we have today.
Vic was a sailing and racing enthusiast through and through. The sport has lost the greatest promoter of sailing in the West Midlands.
