Calling all Solo's & Laser sailors at BSC

Calling all Solo's & Laser sailors at BSC

Spring has sprung, the clocks have been changed and next week is Easter........ that must mean that the moment we have all been waiting for with bated breath has finally arrived, yes it’s the beginning of the Tuesday Night Laser & Solo Series. With lots of prizes up for grabs the handicap and fleet racing starts at

7.00pm….

Also if anyone else wants to come down sailing feel free to join in

This year we are delighted to welcome some new members, they have been practising like crazy over the winter months, so to all you fair weather summertime sailors who have managed to punch well above your weight over the last few years on the Tuesday night series, be warned that the competition has stepped up a notch!

It will be great to see you all back again, so don’t forget, 7PM start this Tuesday right through to 5th Sept which will be the bottle race and prize giving evening.

You may be aware of our handicap system, where we run one scratch race per Tues nights (21 in the series) and extrapolate the personal handicap race results by allocating personal handicap times to allow each sailor. This allows a fair chance of anyone winning the handicap race that night. Each week it recalculates a revised PYN to challenge you for the following week.

New members and visitors are given provisional handicaps which are allocated by the executive committee (bribes are accepted in the bar later!!)

With over 45+ Lasers on our boat park it would be great if we can’t get at least half of you on the water at any given time, not to mention those unfortunates that want to join in the Laser fun but have to beg, borrow and steal a sea worthy craft.

So remember we have spare Lasers for you to use so just ask John Ling and we shall get you sorted.

On the Solo side, Dave Badger will be taking over the over the captaincy of the Solo fleet captain from Nick Thornton during the summer and I am sure you will continue to support him.

Good luck Dave.

See you on the water.

Kind regards

John

BSC club racing was such a success

BSC club racing was such a success

This saturday we started the new race formats which were aimed to encouage the K20 and Novices to join.

After the review in the bar with lots of members haying back for a great social it was generally agreed that the day had gone really well... a lot of this was due to the race management from Nick Thronton thanks Nick. it was great.

Whilst we esptablished some teething issues with flag communication, lines and tie limit, the time for lunch was great and nice to be able to enjoy so good food. Then the back to back worked well, although some boats had a slight delay waiting for everyone to finish, but ths did alow for soem more banter on the water.

Once sailors get to grips with the new format im sure things may settle down.

Heres looking forward to next week.

BSC Laser boys on tour

BSC Laser boys on tour

BSC Laser boys on tour

After a thrilling start of the Laser Wessex Grand Prix both Jeremy Higson and John Ling ended up in the Top 10, With victory going to John and his new boat.

The water was very busy with over 40 boats split between two fleets of Lasers and Bites. It was very blustery, but warm day with strong winds that greeted the 2017 Bowmoor Laser Grand Prix. The weather forecast maybe put a few off attending the first event of the Wessex Grand Prix Laser Series. Despite this 20 Laser sailors entered and enjoyed the spring sunshine. The breeze in the morning was very gusty and tested the sailors ability, Jeremy Higson got a great start and was reading the shifting wind direction well but was just piped to the first buoy by John, who managed to lead until the end gun with Jeremy fighting hard in 6th.

Race two the wind had strengthen and John managed to find his form and charged out in front. But Jeremy got pinned in by two local sailors which didn’t help his speed and was back in 10th. However his skill came through and he finished in a strong position at the end after one great reach taking two boats. With two bullets John felt comfortable to take a port end flyer in the last race which failed dismally!. and put him down the pack. But Jeremy colours came to the top and rounded the windward buoy in the leading pack. The game was on, and soon the Ling magic worked and he clawed his way back to take the lead and the overall cut glass decanter. Jeremy ended on equal points but did have a great day as his back held out and came away with having had a great sail.

More to follow as the season unfolds from the “Bartley Laser boys on Tour”…. And soon with Lizzy, Emma & Katie joining us… Lady/girls

Saturday 1st April 2017 starts our new spring sailing series Racing starts 11.30

Saturday 1st April 2017 starts our new spring sailing series Racing starts 11.30

This Saturday 1st April 2017 starts our new spring sailing series and we WELCOME all club members to come a join in the fabulous sailing especially as the weather is also looking good.

We have changed the sailing format slightly to Fleet racing to encourage more club members to enjoy and below is how we are planning to run the races, so please come on down!! and join in the fun.

Starts 11:30 am with 5 minute warning @ 11:25. Fly numeral pennant 6

Each fleet will then start after the race has begun with 2 intervals apart.

11:30 RS400 start

11:32 General handicap start (GP, Phantom, Aero, 4.7, Mirrors, Taser, RS200/800, Finn, Streaker, Windsurfers etc.)

11:34 Laser/Supernova start

11:36 Solo start

11.38 Novice start (anyone from K20, youths, etc.)

On the technical side we shall be running flag Zulu (20% penalty and restart (no redress, OOD decision) this will hopefully avoid any delays with fleet recalls, this is in place of the Blue Peter.

13.30 Fleet two race 2 min intervals

RS400,

Handicap fleet

Supernovas & Lasers (all Standard & Radial rigs)

Solo’s

BACK TO BACK for last race

15.15 Fleet three race 2 min intervals

RS400

Handicap fleet

Supernovas & Lasers (all Standard & Radial rigs)

Solo’s

Notes for OD’s

o Use the same start line as the finish line

o Start flags are the clubs normal 5, 4, 1 go… thereafter sound signals with class flags

  • Shortening the course on the boat that approaches the line approx. 50mins this most likely will be a slow boat
  • 30 mins Time limit for boats to finish after first boat has finished

o For each fleet shorten the boats on the same lap if possible

o As each boat finishes record their actual time they cross the line – Fleet positions/or handicaps will be used along with average laps to calculate results, although fleet finishing positions will be visible on the water.

o On each race record sheet note the Start time of the exact first race. i.e. RS400 off time

o After race two is finished the 3rd race should be started asap effectively back to back allow for the fleet to return to the line.

  • Results are for each fleet, whilst we will tract an overall combined result this is not used for prizes

I The sailing committee are on hand this weekend to help with any queries and Nick Thornton is OD so I’m sure all will go well. I know change brings apprehension but please try and go with it and see if this change helps the formatting etc. Later in the series we are conducting a review so we welcome feedback and any constructive views to help continually improve things.

Kind regards

thanks to all the people who helped at the working party
A massive thanks to all the people who helped at the working party today. Some really trojans out there. Tom Williams needs a special mention as he had his head down and grafted for hours! Thank you too to Birmingham Uni and Bartley SUP club, Ben can you pass this on, they all worked really hard and their efforts were massively appreciated! What a fab days sailing, we even enjoyed the awful blustery westerly thanks to some excellent OD skills from Guy and Bradley! Jodie Archer ran the galley with a welcoming smile all day and in the working party mood, rearranged and cleaned all behind the bar! Thanks jodie! The club really feels a fab place to be part of, especially after a nice cider post sailing!

Travelling Bartley Lasers leads the fleet!!! Midlands & Wessex GP

Travelling Bartley Lasers leads the fleet!!! Midlands & Wessex GP

Recently Robin Pitt & Jeremy Higson along with me travelled to South Cerney and Clevedon where the team dominated and held the flag high for Bartley.

At Clevedon Robin Pitt found form even in the light airs and bagged his first WIN!!!! Whilst Jeremy at South Cerney Led the pack at the Top mark after managing to get to grips with his new Mk2 sail.

Tuesdays Laser racing has seen some pretty close racing and returning to form has been Les Druyf which has caused a stir as the handicap committee had to convene an emergency session as the normally soft rating was removed because he is still dam good!!!..

Michael Parker has returned to form as is Baker boy (AK Richard) so as the results show after the half way mark it’s still very open on the leader board.

We are always please to see new faces so remember it’s an open session and even if you don’t have a boat we have spare race ready ones to use!!! just come along!!!

See you out on the water very soon

Regards

John

BSC New Bosun Dan Earthquake

BSC New Bosun Dan Earthquake

For those of you that have recently turned up to do rescue you may have noticed a few changes in the garage!! such as it is tidy and the powerboats are ready to use.....

This does not happening by chance; rather Dan Earthquake came forward and kindly volunteered to support Howard and Brad in trying to maintain the clubs equipment in good order.

Weekly Dan compiles a detailed report for the main committee which shows the issues he finds and what he has done to rectify. This is a thankless task and one that must be recognised by us all. So its with big thanks we solute Dan for his efforts.

Going forward I did want to share though some of the surprising things that have come to light. Such as :- damage fuel line, keys and marks left in boat, power on, sailing gear left in boat along with rubbish etc.

Firstly when you take out a rescue boat the crews must ensure that it is always checked over beforehand for fuel, kill cords and that it works!!!

EQUALLY important::::: once you have finished please ensure at the end of the day that

1. You turn off all power remove keys

2. Remove buoys & flags and any gear/rubbish

3. Empty water

4. REPORT ANY DAMANGE.... this is key please so that action can be taken.

IF it’s an engine fault can you place the "OUT OF ACTION" sign on the engine so that the next day it can be looked at! Also TELL either Dan, Howard or Brad

Once again PLEASE take responsibility for looking after our powerboats so that engine props and the general gear last as long as it can, it will save us money... and help keep your membership fee’s down.

Kind regards

John

THANK YOU to all those members for the Working Party

On behalf of Caroline and Bartely Sailing Club Committee we want to say a BIG THANK YOU to all those members that came down early and gave their time freely to help as a team effort to smarten up the club.... those windows in the race hut have never looked so good. Claire inside and Sam the outside!!..

There were so many people attended I lost count after seeing teams all over...., what was amazing is that we could have filled three skips!!!..Apologies to those members that with my help had to go back into the skip to fish our boat covers!!!

It was such a great feeling to see the team effort and what we did achieve by doing this...
