Message from Ben Hodgson, RYA Midlands Co-ordinator

Welcome to the first update of 2021!

I hope you managed to enjoy the festive period and that this email finds you well looking forward to 2021. The year ahead looks to have more ongoing challenges with the COVID restrictions continuing to affect us all both at home and with our boating.

I am writing to let you know of some upcoming events and opportunities that either club management, or club members from all kinds of organisations should be able to join and enjoy through the coming weeks and months. With us all experiencing another set of lockdown restrictions, it is more important than ever that we have something in the diary to look forward to. Also, to let you know that the RYA, both nationally and within the region continue to work to offer support and guidance to make boating, in all its forms, as accessible as possible.

COVID-19 Hub

We continue to update our advice and guidance based on the current government restrictions and you can find the latest guidance at our COVID-19 Hub.

Online/Digital training

We are continuing to deliver online content which you can view and share with your members on the RYA YouTube channel – take a look.

Instructor Training & CPD

For those venues that have Training Centre status, there are a number of training courses and CPD opportunities being programmed for the coming season.

Crucially, the first of these are the Dinghy and Windsurf Senior Instructor courses as well as a FREE series of forums to help instructors prepare for these. All of the courses and CPD sessions can be found and booked HERE.

During lockdown we are going to be running some free online training sessions to help instructors get the most from running OnBoard sessions. When you attend you will be provided access to some new resources for you to use in delivering fun sessions for your junior and youth sailors. For details please contact

In 2018 a new Aspiring Female Instructors project was piloted in the Midlands, which resulted in clubs across the region benefitting from nine new female Dinghy Instructors (DIs) and four female Senior Instructors (SIs). Project lead, Tricia Ordsmith, is inviting expressions of interest to repeat the project this year. The plan is to start with some on-line sessions followed by on the water sessions when COVID allows. Anyone who is interested in becoming an instructor - whether a DI or SI please contact

Please ensure your instructor team is aware of these opportunities as appropriate.

Save the Dates!

It is usually at this time of year when all of the conferences take place at various venues across the UK. Most of these events have been moved to an online format and bookings will open soon if they haven't already done so.

Please do get in touch if there is anything you require support with,

Stay Safe,
