Full Programme for Bartley Juniors

Firstly - congratulations to Harrison for winning the 1st Laser at the Upton Warren Regatta last weekend and to Josh following on in 3rd. Great results for the club.

Bartley has invested alot of time and effort into progressing Juniors from excited starters in their Optimists, through RYA levels 1 to 4 and onto the racing circuit or instructing. K2O continues to be THE fun club for junior sailors in the West Midlands with over 40 participants in the Saturday morning programme.

However, not all juniors are aware of what is available to them once they have learned to sail, so here is a round up of the type of activity you could get involved in:

RS Tera - search up the class website for the UK RS Tera association and you will find a midlands based circuit of weekends of racing split into the Pro (larger rig), sport (white and orange sail used on our club boats), and a coached regatta fleet (for those who can sail a triangle). If you want to borrow a club Tera for one of these events just ask permission at K2O - they are easy to put on a roof rack so no towing required.

RYA Regional Championships - 28 / 29 September. Two days of championship and squad selector racing for the experienced, coaching for the regatta fleet (RYA level 2 to 4), or fun and games for the OnBoard participants (RYA level 0 to 2). Details on the RYA Website. Midlands event is at Draycote Water this year. Bartley usually attend with 3 or 4 K2O sailors.

National Schools Sailing Association Nationals at Weymouth and Portland National Sailing Accademy - this takes place next week and Bartley will be represented by Harrison and Josh in their Laser 4.7s. A great week of camping, sailing and fun for schools sailors. Probably too late to enter this year, but a good event to cut your teeth on next year. Ben Julian who runs the SUP club is your contact for this event.

RYA Midlands Youth Series - a 6 location series for Juniors in the midlands with the final event at Bartley on 15th September. 5 Short races per day with plenty of prizes for juniors aged between 8 and 17 with RYA level 2 or above. Next event is at Staunton Harold SC (near Burton Upon Trent) this Saturday. Megan and Millie will be representing Bartley so if you have a boat and the day free why not join them. Details on Staunton Harold SC website.

Holiday regattas - going to the beach on holiday or to the Lake district? Check the local clubs for open meetings or regatta weeks. Usually a familly friendly race programme with some fun activities thrown in. We have had many years of fun participating in the Dartmouth Regatta where we got to meet the Olympic sailing team, and Junior Camel Week in Padstow with its 'Swallows and Amazons' beach competition, quiz evening, and BBQ night - have a look around as these are alot of fun for the junior and youth sailors.

Class training - if you have a boat then look at the class association website for training events. Topper and Laser are both good at this. Megan was at Weymouth last weekend where she received coaching in a ratio of 1 to 7 with the UK Laser Class 4.7 national coach. They spent 2 days with 5 hours on the water per day just practicing how to start and sail the first 4 minutes of the race fast - a great way to meet other young sailors and practice those key sailing skills.

Holiday camps - looking for a place to leave your energetic young sailor whilst you are at work and they are on holiday? Why not give the grandparents a rest and sign them onto an activity at Rockley based at Bartley. Benn will be happy to hear from you and let you know what is available from sailing through to windsurfing.

Warm, sunny sailing holidays - There are a number of great sailing holidays for the family or individuals, Neilson, Wildwind, Club Vass are all well known providers with sun, sea, and sailing for all.

Finally - you haven't got a boat so you can't participate anyway? Well why not sign up for one of the reconditioned Toppers. The third boat is now revitalised and ready to be handed to its new owner this Saturday, so if you want one let me know on  and I will scrub one up for you for the price of the boat space you will keep it in. When you have finished with it just hand it back and the next lucky junior can take it on. These are fine for regatta fleet racing but once you get the bug you will want one in full racing livery and that will be up to the bank of Mum and Dad...

If you want more info on any of the above or advice on what boat to buy your young sailor, how to transport boats, what sailing gear to buy etc.. just let me know on  and I will try to help you out.

Whatever you are doing and wherever you are sailing this summer have a great time.

Club Topper #3 ready to go...
